A relatively new test performed on a sample of a woman’s saliva can help identify her risk of developing breast cancer. The test, developed by Intergenetics, can identify genetic markers which show how likely a woman is to develop breast cancer. Armed with the results, women can work with their physician to create a care plan to help ensure early detection of potential breast cancer. The test, which is called Onca Vue, is covered by many major insurance companies.

A San Francisco-based surgeon released an infographic last week based on research revealing that 4.93% of women in the United States have undergone breast augmentation surgery, most surgeries occur on the West coast, and enough implants have been created since 1997 to fill the size of an Olympic-sized swimming pool. And that is just in the United States!

It’s not surprising that breast augmentation has become one of the top cosmetic surgery procedures for over a decade, but what’s interesting is that the procedure growth rate has been virtually recession proof for the past 20 years.

“There’s a reason that breast augmentation has been the number one cosmetic surgery—not just here in the U.S., but worldwide—for so long now,” said Dr. Brown. “As the high rate of patient satisfaction shows, this is a procedure that works. I hope this infographic serves as a helpful reference going forward, not only for other plastic surgeons, but for patients as well.”

Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (RFSL) has petitioned the National Health Service in Sweden to cover the cost of breast implants for transgendered women. Currently, some patients undergo hormone therapy but are then denied implants.

In support of their position they cite statistics from the board which show that transgendered women who are denied implants are much more likely to commit suicide. The difference is staggering – in the overall population of Sweden, the suicide rate is about 1.6%; for transgendered women denied implants, it is 30-40%.

In new research being presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium Thursday, researchers from England assessed the impact of three different diets on the weight and insulin blood levels in 115 women. A third of the participants followed a calorie-restricted, so-called Mediterranean diet every day, while another third went on a diet that restricted carbs in addition to calories, but for just two days a week. A third group followed a low-carb diet two days a week as well, but they were allowed to eat unlimited protein and healthy fats.

“The take home message is that this potentially a very interesting approach for anybody concerned about weight or insulin,” said Dr. Michelle Harvie, Phd, a registered dietitian with the Genesis Prevention Center at the University Hospital in South Manchester, England. She cautioned, however, that the study is “quite preliminary” and relatively small.

Continuing concerns over faulty French-made breast implants have prompted Venezuela to offer free surgeries to remove the implants, the country’s top health official said.

Venezuela’s Health Minister Eugenia Sader said women with implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) can visit plastic surgery-equipped hospitals to have the implants removed. The free procedure will be to remove the implants, but will not include replacing them, Sader announced Tuesday.

Health officials in France have recommended women with PIP implants to get them replaced, and have also recently agreed to pay for surgeries. In Brazil and Argentina, however, only checkups are being recommended.

According to Dr. Marisol Graterol, president of the Venezuelan Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 women in the country have breast enlargement surgery each year. It’s unclear how many of these women have the PIP implants, but doctors say that the French implants used to be used widely until sales of PIP implants were halted in Venezuela in April 2010.

Plastic surgery societies are recommending that women with PIP breast implants see a doctor to have them checked. Graterol said doctors should evaluate each patient’s individual situation to make a decision whether or not the implants need to be removed.

Scientists in the United States have developed a new vaccine which trains the immune system to attack proteins which aid in tumor growth. Although it works on mice, it may not work on humans, but it is hoped that the response is strong enough to translate.

This solution is unique because it is effective against “triple-negative tumors” which are resistant to traditional hormone therapy. The drug is currently being tested on human cancer cells in a lab. Clinical testing could begin in 2013.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is backing a national registry for patients who receive implant surgery. The registry, originally created to track a very rare condition, has been expanded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) to document information on each individual patient’s breast implant type and medical history with the procedure.

The goal of the registry is to improve patient care by providing high quality data on the surgical results of US women. Dr. Brian Braithwaite, a Chicago area surgeon and former Chief of Plastic Surgery at Bethesda Naval Medical Center says “All ASPS member surgeons should continue to embrace the recommendations of both the ASPS and the FDA because the information obtained from such a registry contributes to patient safety, a paramount concern in cosmetic surgery.”

Dr. Anthony Youn, a Detroit-based board-certified plastic surgeon and author of the plastic surgery blog “In Stitches.” warns about the dangers of smokers who have breast implants. He explains that smoking causes restricted blood flow which can cause nipples to blacken and actually fall off.

He tells of one surgical patient who smoked too soon after surgery, causing her nipples to turn purple. Once purple, there isn’t much time before the nipples turn black and fall off, he said. The only way he could prevent this from happening? Leeches.

“We went medieval,” Youn wrote. Leeches sucked out the excess blood – which contained toxins – over the course of a few days to improve the patient’s condition.

Dr. Jennifer Walden, an Austin-Texas based plastic surgeon agrees and points out that not only implant patients are at risk. She said procedures that lift the skin, including face-lifts, tummy tucks, and mastectomies are especially dangerous for smokers. Smoking, she said, could cause skin death on the bottom of where the skin flap is located, which could cause chronic problems like open wounds and infections. What’s more, she said smokers seeking breast augmentation with a lift could face major complications if skin flap housing the implant deteriorates.
