Last Friday, April 30th, 2010, CBS medical talk show The Doctors featured a new technique called the Keller Funnel No Touch Technique in its story about breast augmentation. The segment, B Beautiful Now, highlighted a new approach that surgeons are using in the placement of silicone breast implants.
The device used looks similar to a bag of icing for cake decoration. The implant is placed into the Keller Funnel, which is wide at one end and narrows at the other. After the surgeon makes the incision, the narrow end of the funnel is placed into the skin’s opening. The surgeon then squeezes the funnel and the implant slides through the narrow end into the breast for positioning.
The procedure has more advantages than just ease for the surgeon. According to television host and acclaimed plastic surgeon Dr. Drew Ordon, the Keller Funnel is used to eliminate the breast implant coming in contact with surgeons’ gloves and with the skin at the incision site. He references that using this no-touch technique may improve capsular contraction, a painful complication associated with breast implants. To view the Keller Funnel in use by Dr. Ordon, click here.
Capsular contraction is when a hardened shell of tissue forms around the implant, and in order to ease the complication, a physician will typically have to apply pressure to break it up. It is not 100% clear why this occurs, but it is theorized that contracture could be due to infection or even the talc on surgical gloves. With the Keller Funnel method, the surgeon never actually touches the implant, lowering the risk for infections.
