Breast implants made by French manufacturer Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) are being recalled by French health authorities for the use of unauthorized silicone gel.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that there was no evidence as yet that they could harm patients. However, both the MHRA and the French medical device regulatory authority, AFSSAPS, are investigating the situation.
Dr. Susanne Ludgate, from the MHRA, said “Clinicians should not implant these devices and they should quarantine any stock.”
“Patients who have concerns about their PIP silicone gel filled breast implants should contact their breast implant surgeon.”
Dr. Ludgate assures that once the MHRA receives more information about the safety of the implants, they will provide further advice on patient management as necessary.
The number of women affected by the recall remains unknown, but Yahoo News reports that up to 35,000 – 45,000 women in 66 different countries have had implants supplied by the French company since 2001.

Leave A CommentOkay this might be a silly question but how do you do a recall on breast implants ??? And were there any here in the U.S.
I hope you keep us updated on this story…
Implants have serial numbers/ID tag numbers on them, hopefully Drs will have records of them
this sounds scary.. what kind should i get done? because some studies say “silicone isnt bad” but now? i don’t know, sounds scary!
i will investigate more xxx
Luckily there have been no findings as of yet that indicate that the ‘PIP’ implants have caused serious harm. However, because the silicone used in the implants was not authorized, health officials had no choice but to recall the implants. I will be following this story while the facts are being figured out, but if anyone hears anything please let me know!
@YankeeGirl: Basically the recall prohibits any further sale or distribution of the implants. If a surgeons office has the implants in stock, they are no longer allowed for use in surgeries.
@Rocio: Fortunately the recalled implants are not representative of all silicone implants, but nonetheless you should definitely discuss with your doctor which type of implant would be best for you!
i hope this helps others as well.
