Six New Jersey women checked themselves into the hospital last week for skin infections and abscesses on their bottoms after receiving butt injections administered by unlicensed providers.

The women underwent surgery and were given antibiotics. No arrests have been made.

Different from medical-grade silicone, the substance used in the botched procedures was believed to be a diluted version of nonmedical-grade silicone, similar to the material contractors use to caulk bathtubs.

It’s not the first time a group of women ended up in the hospital with a mysterious substance injected into their behinds.

“Usually it’s industrial silicone, it’s the stuff that you buy at Home Depot,” said Dr. Renato Saltz, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

“What a tragedy,” said Gregory Borah, president of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Using over-the-counter silicone can cause abscesses that he said resemble “a big zit.”

Instances of botched procedures, says Borah, underscore the need for patients who seek augmentation to have it administered by a licensed professional in a sterile setting.
