Contrary to popular belief, breast implant surgery has been around for a very long time, the first surgery dating back to the late 1800′s. Though modern medicine has evolved immensely since then, the function of the boob job remains relatively the same – to alter the size and shape of a woman’s breasts.

According to various records, a doctor named Vincenz Czerny is credited with performing the first breast implant surgery. Originally, Czerny filled a woman’s bust with tissue removed from growths on the body. Over time, doctors on the quest for the perfect breasts began to use a variety of materials to achieve the desired results. They experimented with glass balls, ivory, wool, ox bones, plastics, and even sponges. As one could expect, these substances did not yield much success and often caused great difficulty for women.

As time progressed, doctors experimented with different materials until silicone was introduced in the 1950′s. At this point, the silicone was injected into the breast which proved rather dangerous, actually causing some women to lose their breasts due to the complications of the injection. In the early 1960′s two doctors from Texas remedied this method by creating the silicone implant as a pouch rather than an injection. Two years after the silicone implant was introduced in the U.S., France created the saline implant.

Those in favor of saline accused silicone of causing cancer, prompting the FDA to ban silicone in 1992, though later lifted in 2006. A third method was then developed using the material polypropylene that had a “silly string” effect. Like silly string, the polypropylene implants never stopped expanding, causing the breasts to grow larger as time went on. Though an interesting concept, the implants caused a variety of problems and were eventually banned in the U.S. and Europe in 2001.

Today, there are two main types of breast implants, silicone and saline-filled. In addition, there are several other types of breast implants being studied all over the world, including cohesive gel implants (“gummy bears”) and stem-cell implants. Consistent with the evolution of medicine, it can be expected that breast implant surgery will continue to expand as new methods and materials are developed.

It is clear that breast augmentation surgery has come a long way from glass balls, ivory and silly string. The function of the boob job has definitely come of age as well. Modern medicine has advanced in the ways of altering the size and shape of breasts, but more importantly, has allowed for thousands of women annually to increase personal enhancement and self-esteem.
